Yesterday, I was outraged to learn that a respected scholar and clergywoman, Dr. Yolanda Pierce, was targeted by unnamed students at Princeton Theological Seminary with vile, vicious and demeaning "satire" in a newsletter titled The Foreskin several days ago. This newsletter was circulated all over campus. The distributors and authors were operating under the cloak of anonymity.
They claimed their newsletter was satire. It's as hilarious as a burning cross.
This is an excerpt of one column in the newsletter that names Dr. Pierce:
"...no one else around here is black and female... We love it so much that we thought, for almost a whole second, that maybe the seminary should hire more people who are neither white nor male."
We are not amused.
We need to let the administration at Princeton Seminary hear the blaring sound of our trumpets.
Carmen Van Kerckhove at Racialicious defines "hipster racism" as:
"... ideas, speech, and action meant to denigrate another’s person race or ethnicity under the guise of being urbane, witty (meaning "ironic" nowadays), educated, liberal, and/or trendy."
Several years ago, I decided against applying to Princeton Seminary because it is well-known among black clergy throughout this nation that this seminary is unashamed to be known as a vast garden of flourishing white racism and classism. Ask several persons of color at Princeton about the climate of the university, and you will learn that racism and classism and sexism appear in many varieties.
Dr. Pierce is an esteemed black scholar and blog host of Reflections of An Afro-Christian Scholar. We should be more than appalled that students (who will be ministers and/or professors and theologians) had the gall to ridicule and demean her in a newsletter.
A hate crime is defined as:
"Any act of intimidation, harassment, physical force or threat of physical force directed against any person, or gamely, or their property or advocate, motivated either in whole or in part by hostility to their real or perceived race, ethnic background, religious belief, sex, age, disability, or sexual orientation, with the intention of causing fear or intimidation, or to deter the free exercise or enjoyment of any rights or privileges secured by the Constitution ...whether or not performed under color of law."
Have the students been expelled? No.
If black students had openly disparaged a white faculty member throughout campus - directly or indirectly - swift disciplinary action would have been taken by university officials. The "just joking!" defense would not have been accepted.
Have the students responsible received disciplinary probation? No.
From what I have learned (so far), only two of the students came forward and apologized. I suspect that those two did not act alone.
Black women are under attack in every sphere they step into. If we fail to act, these attacks will become more vicious and more common. We have made the mistake of not acting swiftly to defend ourselves in the past. We are now paying the price for our reluctance to draw a line in the sand.
Any forms of lynching of black women in the Academy will not be pacified by the tears and empty apologies of students who want to strike a match and run from the blaze. It is not an exaggeration to refer to the public ridicule of black faculty as lynching. In the Academy, credibility matters. Reputation matters.
I ask those of you who understand the power of constructive engagement to step forward.
We can not continue to look askance any longer. We can not be detached when black women are being verbally, physically or professionally attacked. Whether the attack is fueled by black misogyny or white racism, our disapproval must be clear.
Remember when Daily Kos posted an image of Michelle Obama, scantily-clad with hands tied to a post and surrounded by Klansman with a burning cross? "We were just joking!" they claimed.
I visited a blog and saw a photo of Michelle Obama with an ape face substituted for her face and the caption read "ape!" Their blog is satire, they claimed. "We were just joking!"
Many of you have seen other examples of hipster racism.
This "just joking" defense is being used again and again. It's time we put a swift end to this tactic.
I would imagine that Dr. Pierce is going to handle this matter with her employer and those involved in the manner in which she feels is most appropriate and godly. I imagine she would not call for public protest of any kind.
Our tacit acceptance of hipster racism has broad implications. This incident is just one of many incidents that have not been sternly confronted. There are many covert racist tactics that continue in institutions and in corporations all over the nation. Most blacks who are demeaned will probably keep things "private" and quiet.
We will not permit black women to stand alone against racism, misogyny, sexism or classism in the Academy, while university officials coddle, protect and pat on the head the students (or faculty) who attempt to attack the credibility of black scholars who have spent decades earning national and international respect.
The university officials who must be contacted are:

Please, make a phone call and leave a voicemail message stating that:
1) It is a national outrage that this conduct has not been properly addressed.
2) These repeated instances of professional disparagement of black women in the Academy by racist students is a national disgrace. It reflects the institutionalized acceptance of demeaning and disrespecting black women in every sphere of society.
3) The passive stance by university officials when black scholars face public slander and disparagement by students and colleagues is symptomatic of a larger issue that remains unaddressed at many white universities throughout our nation.
4) Please mention that if all students responsible are not expelled, we are prepared to submit a formal complaint to the N.A.A.C.P. within seven business days to charge the university with failure to treat this carefully orchestrated action as a hate crime that was intended to disparage a black faculty member. While Dr. Pierce was not being threatened, there was a clear intention to publicly ridicule and publicly humiliate her.
Sistas, I ask you to inform your blog guests of the necessity to act swiftly.
Your pen has power. Your voice has power. Wield it diligently. Aim skillfully and forcefully.

UPDATE-11/26/2008
On November 26th, Princeton Seminary posted a response on their web site to respond to the heat they have received. Click here to read "Seminary Response to Malicious and Racist Newsletter".
We should also sound our trumpets with the local media. (Keep in mind that the media will keep the recording of your message and will quote you in any article that is written. Choose your words carefully and correctly relay the facts!)

The site traffic reports reveal that numerous visitors are coming to this blog from New Jersey. Every day, I notice there are numerous visits from Princeton. Should we be surprised?
Many Princeton, New Jersey blog visitors are arriving at this blog by googling the title of the newsletter! How interesting...Since only those who are at Princeton would know the title of the newsletter, I suspect that these visitors are attempting to find out which blogs are blowing the trumpet about this vile incident!
Sistas, don't be led into debates in your comment sections with those who want to defend this racist conduct or who demand to know why you are offended! Racists always attempt to cross-examine their accusers.
We will not be detoured.

BE AWARE: Princeton trolls ARE clicking into the profiles of commenters here in order to visit other blogs and give inaccurate facts and false claims that the matter is resolved at Princeton. Some of the others are "claiming" to be outraged over the incident in order to be deceptive in giving false "insider information". They refuse to name the wrongdoers in order to protect them - while visiting our blogs saying "we're on your side".
For the bloggers who have site traffic monitoring software at your blogs, please send me an email listing the New Jersey IP addresses that access the discussions at your blog concerning this incident.

i'm on it.
I called and left a message. I wasn't 'nice' but I was FIRM. I read about this and we need to do something for the other Professor that was mentioned as well! We can get the Afrospear association involved and put out a YouTube video as well. I didn't attend Princeton even though I was offered a full scholarship by a recruiter (which I sometimes regret) because I just knew it was too segregated and not really inclusive. I couldn't imagine having to deal with that while trying to earn my degree.
This is outrageous. Can I make a call from Nigeria?
Some secondary school sudents in northern part of nigeria burnt thier female teacher her life for handling the Qur'an. It was sad and this is sad
That "Just Joking" defense is so incredibly weak. I'm tired of people attacking my intelligence by assuming I'm too stupid to realize these are not jokes. These are thinly veiled racist rants. I'm making my calls this morning.
I am here to toot my horn, love the blog by the way :-) I will definitely make the call.
I'm on it, thanks for getting this info out.
First, I would like to say thank you for stopping by my blog. Do come again. Second, you have a great blog with interesting posts.
Lisa,
This is one of those times when to keep silent amounts to betrayal. It is good to voice our protest, but to also find out how we can amplify our voices. I am sure that those responsible thought that this would fly under the radar because of the attention placed on Obama, the selection of his team, and the economy.
Thanks also for your continuing support. You are a gem!
Much obliged for the heads up...on it!
I am an african woman leaving in australia I agree that this is outrageous and we as black women should not tolerate this anymore. I have sent an email to the two people.
It is time that we as black people and we as black women stand up and be heard and say NO MORE!
Thanks for a fantastic blog.
hi there...
when i first saw your comment on my blog, i was like "no she did not just come on here and post up some completely unrelated stuff after i took a stab at opening up about my life on NMN." however, i have moved from that initial response and i must agree, the "just joking" madness must end because it's just NOT FUNNY.
action will be taken from my end. trust and believe.
be blessed...

I did my part this afternoon.
Beyond ridiculous. I find it fascinating, in the late 1980s, early 1990s, it used to be the conservative students at college campuses who did this sortt of thing. No surprise there; we always knew they hated us, even though they said they were "joking". But now, the supposed "liberal," and "hipster" types are doing it too, like they don't know any better. I'm sure they have had a history of doing this sort of thing, probably going back to high school and college. But a seminary??????????
To all activists,
Your voice matters. This "just joking" defense must be stopped.
The issue, as we know, is not about ONE incident at Princeton. It is not about ONE newsletter distributed at Princeton. There is a much larger issue to be tackled.
For any one who wants to see a copy of The Foreskin, I have provided you with two sources at Princeton and you are CERTAINLY WELCOME to contact those sources and make an inquiry.
I will not be part of the mass distribution of this insulting material.
For those who have not chosen to step on to the battlefield, THAT is your decision.
For those who want to conduct further due diligence, no one is stopping you from launching an investigation of your own and then choosing action or inaction.
In case anyone thinks the race of the perpetrators changes the equation, it does not. Racism. Misogyny. Sexism. Classism. We will fight them all, and the race of the perpetrators does not determine whether or not we are outraged.
For those who think that my comment section is a "free speech zone", it is NOT and never will be. I choose whose comments enter my blog.
For those who think this post is an invitation to have a debate, it is not.
Thankyou for spreading the word. It's a relief to see the school took action.
Continue to shine

Whoa! I hadn't heard about this at all until I just read it here. Wow! I'm going to call and I'm going to put together a post about this on my blog. This is just disgusting!
Wow. It is time that the "we were just joking" theme ends. Consider my call made.
This incident disturbed me because my daughter used to attend Princeton and I liked the way staff handled the students and created programs to make everyone feel welcomed. Nevertheless, while I'm surprised that students interested in God and spirituality would create something so insulting, I am not surprised that this happened at a school like Princeton because brains and intellectual muscle do not guarantee tolerance, understanding, nor compassion. Furthermore it could be argued that without the proper spiritual foundation, a person of formidable intelligence and talent is more likely to be arrogant, and arrogance goes hand-in-hand with racism or the belief that your ethnic group is superior to others. In addition, I know that racism and classicism are comfortable bedfellows at Ivy League institutions despite the schools' efforts to expand diversity within their communities.
I'm glad Princeton addressed the newsletter and is investigating other students beyond the two who came forward. This behavior, while it may appear on the surface to fall under free speech, seems in direct conflict with Princeton's standard of honor. I say the newsletter may appear to fall under free speech (something good universities try to encourage) but question whether it actually does since a professor is not necessarily a public figure.
As for the "it's just a joke" argument, I recall that the folks who did Obama Waffles also claimed it was just a joke and that they were "shocked" that people were offended. Rush Limbaugh also hides behind "I was just joking." A lame excuse for bigotry.
Attempts at humor without wisdom is not wit.
somehow i got to this blog...i think firstt through racialicious then cruel secretary after reading a post about that horrible newsletter. i read that announcement from on pts' website, and thought, "wtf???" i have my mdiv and thm from there...and i have to say i'm completely ashamed of it right now.
it makes me even more insane that they targeted dr. pierce. i was lucky to have her for a class and independant study, and seriously, this is umbelievable.
i will contact both administrators!
mkk
Wonderful information as usual. As a woman who's been going through some things, I always stop by your blog for some strength and encouragement.
Thank you for the information and I will definitely get involved.
By the way, you've been tagged. I love your blog.
I've sent emails to the dean of students and the president of PTS. I am cross posting this information.
Rev. Lisa,
Thanks for the heads up with the IP address. A person with that IP address came to my blog site at least twice on 12/3/08, but did not comment.
I just read this today. I am on it!
I am outraged and will be contacting the necessary people. I am beyond fed up with the "just joking" excuse for racist behavior.
Hello Lisa,
I have sent a letter to both the Dean and the President. This was done earlier this week. I also forwarded a copy to the letter to The Cultural Affairs Department.
I went on the schools site and of course they made no mention of the incident.
Please let me know if more action is needed.
Nu Girl
One of the perps contacted me privately by email. I knew this person was involved and trying to pretend otherwise. They thought they'd get a pat on the head and a hug but I decided to respond - and I laid him out and told him to make sure to distribute my response to the rest of the perps and spectators as well just so we'd be clear and they can stop pretending. Well he replied by calling me a 'colonialist'. Ha! We have struck a nerve. I know my site traffic has spiked this week from New Jersey and I did a quick google search and my first post is ranked prominently. I just want to get the information out to as many people as possible and for our position to be clear this will not be tolerated. I also want other Women of Color in Academia to know they have support.
Just found about this yesterday and linked to it on my site. I will be calling.
Hello Everyone:
I was doing some housekeeping and backtracking IP addresses when I saw this posted on the PTSEM site @:
www.ptsem.edu/news/diversityinitiativesapc.php
Princeton Seminary Diversity Initiatives Moving Forward with an Action Plan Committee
In the church as well as in the academy there is a growing awareness that human diversity is an educational opportunity and asset. No one is defined by or lives in the world in a single identity category, but rather in multiple roles: through racial identities and gender identities; through religious affiliations and ethnic legacies; through socioeconomic attributes and sexual orientations.
In order to foster deeper learning, cultivate greater understanding within a diverse Seminary community, and embrace the realities of our context, President Torrance has created an Action Plan Committee (APC). This committee is composed of a diverse cross-section of faculty, students, and administrators.
The APC is charged with the following tasks:
• Implementing short-term strategies for constructive dialogue regarding a recent student publication;
• Exploring and recommending processes that will allow us to move forward beyond this event;
• Working with the Office of Multicultural Relations in conjunction with initiatives that are already in process;
• Assisting the community to work toward an institutional environment that goes beyond managing diversity to one that values and capitalizes on diversity in all areas.
For more information or to send comments, email ActionPlanCommittee@ptsem.edu.
This is not a direct course of action but a stalling tactic in my opinion. Since they have provided an email address I think we need to remind them what the offenses are and we are still monitoring the situation.

All 22 of you have answered the call to action...and we need the trumpets blowing loudly!
Please feel free to display a badge at your blog and link to this post or send an email to your distribution lists with a link to this post.
Peace, blessings and DUNAMIS!

Welcome Purple Zoe!
The Princeton administration has not taken action until justice has been served and the actions are severe enough that ALL students are clear that there is a zero tolerance policy on racism.
Nothing has been resolved. There are Princeton trolls who have claimed that the situation is settled. They are lying in order to attempt the protestors to back off.
We are demanding ZERO TOLERANCE ON RACISM!
Peace, blessings and DUNAMIS!

I saw that statement the day after it was posted so it's been up there for awhile.
It's just a smoke screen to fend off any negative media attention.
Thanks though, for mentioning that you've seen it because I am sure there are some reading this comment section who didn't read it.
Peace, blessimgs and DUNAMIS!

@ All
In the very beginning, the Princeton administration called for "healing" and "reconciliation" when this racist incident occurred.
Then, the call-in campaign began and they administration was aware that this incident was NOT in the walls of the Princeton commumity.
After several days of receiving angry (and constructive) calls, a statement appeared on the web site stating that the newsletter was "racist and malicious".
There are several Princeton trolls who are attempting to contact persons whose profiles are open in the comment sections that they are visiting.
Khadija at Muslim Bushido has reported on some of the tactics being used.
Khadija mentioned that we CAN NOT be silent because if we do not take action against racism then it is a weapon aimed at all of us and a threat to all of us - not just to the person(s) targeted.
I also have noticed these tactics that all should be aware of:
1 - False information being given by those who are claiming to "help out with updates".
2 - Claims being made by Princeton students that the incident is not racist when their president clearly stated it WAS.
3 - Anonymous commenters showing up at black blogs feigning "confusion" and asking for clarity about why this incident is racist. Please direct them to the Office of the President of their seminary.
4 - Commenters making insulting and patronizing comments with "I don't know if you know this but..." when we CLEARLY are aware of all of the facts!
5 - Commenters claiming that the first hand account of witnesses on campus who have reviewed the newsletter is NOT sufficient evidence. They do not DECIDE which sources we deem credible and trustworthy - WE DO!
6 - Commenters showing up at the black blogs launching criticisms and hurling insults about the protest. Please don't waste your energy on fools. You do not have to post every comment submitted at your own blog or respond to every fool.
It is not necessary to have the last word when you can hit the "delete" button.
7 - Commenters who CLAIM to know the persons involved but refusing to identify the wrongdoers by name are PROTECTING the wrongdoers while CLAIMING to be so outraged ocer this incident.
8 - Commenters who are showing up saying that they want to foster community with the blog hosts who have joined this protest. Remember that every person who gives you sympathy and claims to feel the way you do IS NOT vetted as an ally.
9 - Record the IP addresses of every NJ visitor that clicks into your post on the Princeton hate crime incident. Please send those IP addresses to me so that they can be placed on the watch list.
10 - Those of you who are sending out mass email notes instead of posting on your blogs, please continue in this effort. The more activity that occurs that the Princeton trolls CAN NOT trace or track, the better!
Right now, they have no idea how much email activity and they only know of a handful of blogs who have put up posts.
Full speed ahead with ALL behind-the-scenes actions!
We need to continue to urge blog guests to continue elevating the constructive engagement. Blog hosts may link to this post with a badge at their blogs.
Peace, blessings and DUNAMIS!
Lisa
